Tyler Civic Theatre Center is pleased to announce its 10th New Play Festival. For plays selected, a Readers Theatre will be held in the Rogers Theatre on Saturday, July 8, 2017. Adult playwrights [over 18] are invited to submit plays for general/adult audiences or children/teen audiences. Again this year, the festival encourages junior playwrights [ages 12-18] to submit plays for children’s theatre or for older teen audiences.
Scripts for consideration must be emailed to email@example.com no later than Monday, May 8, 2017 (11:59 pm cst) Scripts should be e-mailed as an attachment in an accessible format (MS Word or pdf). They may also be mailed or delivered to 400 Rose Park Drive, Tyler TX 75702, on or before the deadline.
The submitted scripts should include the following:
A brief synopsis of your play
A statement with your submission stating that you have paid the submission fee of $10 per script (not per playwright) by: Check [payable to TCTC] or Credit Card by clicking here.
Indicate which division your play is to be entered Adult Division ___ or Junior Division ___
For Junior Playwrights: My age is ____, and I am in the ____ grade at _______________School or other.
I certify that the manuscript I am submitting under the title
_______________________________________________________________ is my original work and has not been previously published.
On a separate cover sheet, the playwright will include his or her name and contact information for the use of the Festival coordinator. The playwright’s name should not appear on any other pages of the script.
Three persons that are experienced in Community Theater will evaluate the scripts submitted to the New Play Festival. The scripts’ evaluators will not know the identity of the playwright. (a blind evaluation)
The pages of the script must be numbered. The script must be submitted in standard script formats.
Only unpublished scripts will be considered. Sections of a work in progress, such as one act of a multi-act play, are welcome. In the consensus of the coordinator and evaluators, content of the plays must not violate accepted community theatre standards in the East Texas region. All those submitting plays will be notified no later than June 10, 2017 by email, announcing the selections to be read at the New Play Festival Readers Theatre on July 8, 2017.
A playwright whose script is selected shall cast their play (provide readers) and provide a script to each reader.
TCTC can provide a pool of actors should the playwright not be able to cast their play themselves. Each play is given a maximum of 45 minutes, with 40 minutes to read the script and five minutes for the playwright to introduce himself or herself and the readers. TCTC volunteers will time each presentation. The coordinators will designate the order of reading after scripts have been selected. The first play will start at 1:00 pm. All plays will be read as soon as the stage is set for the next reading. No specific start time will be given to any play other than the first of the day.
While rehearsals are encouraged, it is the intent of the New Play Festival that scripts shall be read in "readers’ theatre" format. TCTC will provide stools, stands for scripts, and adequate lighting. Readings will be in the Rogers Theatre within the theatre center. No technical effects or amplification devices are to be used. Simple props or accessories that enhance the script are encouraged. All are welcome to attend the New Play Festival for a minimal charge of $5.00 per adult and $3.00 for students and seniors. This will gain entrance to all readings throughout the day.
The 2017 New Play Festival Coordinator is Amanda Spangler.
Please e-mail any questions to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Of the plays chosen to be read at the TCTC New Play Festival, one will be chosen that day to have a full production the following month on September 14-17, 2017 in the Rogers Theatre. Directing, casting, rehearsal and production details are TBD.
